Coaching is a process that helps individuals or teams develop their potential and achieve their goals. It focuses on promoting responsibility, commitment, and the ability to learn of the coachee. Coaching has become increasingly popular in recent years as it is an effective tool for helping individuals and organizations achieve their desired goals.
With the increasing popularity of positive psychology in the field of personal development, both researchers and practitioners in the field of personal development, such as coaches, have applied knowledge of positive psychology to promote individual potential. This has led to the concept of positive psychological coaching, which aims to promote the strengths and talents of the coachee so that each individual can use them to their full potential. In addition, positive psychology also focuses on personal growth and development, leading to good well-being, understanding one's strengths, and using those strengths to their full potential.
Industrial and organizational psychologists such as Van Zyl and colleagues saw the potential of using positive psychology in the coaching process and studied and summarized the positive psychology coaching process, which consists of five steps as follows:
* **Building a relationship** The coach begins by getting to know the coachee by building a professional relationship and trust. They also use observation methods to understand the coachee's work style and relationships with other people in the organization.
* **Finding strengths and giving feedback** Coaches can use a variety of methods to find the coachee's strengths. The most popular method is to use a strengths survey, which is a psychological test that helps to indicate the level of strengths. There are also more creative methods, such as using board games to observe the coachee's playing behavior. Strengths can also be found through interviews and observation. Once the process is complete, the coach will summarize the information they find for the coachee.
* **Creating a vision and ideal goal** The coachee will be assisted by the coach in creating the ideal identity they want to be. This is done by writing down personality traits and behaviors in as concrete and clear a way as possible. They will also consider what kind of person they will be if they achieve their goals at the end.
* **Setting goals, finding strategies, and taking action based on strengths** The coachee will be assisted in creating subgoals based on strengths, or in finding strategies that will help them get closer to their ideal self.
* **Summarize the results** The coach and coachee conclude the coaching process by evaluating the progress that has been made. If the coachee has areas they want to improve, they can still enter the coaching process again in the future.
In addition to the five steps in positive psychological coaching, the coachee's success also depends on three important factors:
* **The coachee must apply the skills they have learned from coaching in their real work environment so that they can transfer what they have learned to their real life.**
* **There must be an evaluation of effectiveness after coaching by checking whether the sub-goals set have been achieved, as well as evaluating the coachee's well-being to ensure that it is still at an appropriate level.**
* **The coachee must be empowered and confident in achieving their goals by promoting the use of strengths and creating the right mindset when facing work situations.**
The above is a common point of the coaching process from many coaches. However, the details and techniques used by each coach will vary to some extent, such as the interpretation of the results of the coachee's strength assessment or the approach to interviewing or collecting coachee data. These differences will affect the data used to develop the coachee's potential, and ultimately lead to the use of different strength promotion techniques by each coach.
In conclusion, the coaching process has been used in organizations and businesses for a long time and has adopted new methods and concepts to make the promotion of individual potential more effective and in line with changes in people in society. Positive psychological coaching is one of the newly developed methods that coaches use to help coachees see their strengths and positive potential more than their weaknesses. In the future, as new psychological knowledge and theories emerge that may be compatible with coaching and can meet the needs of self-development of coachees, new methods and techniques may be developed in the field of positive psychological coaching.
